In September 2012, US Fish and Wildlife Service and staff from the Virginia Tech Mussel Lab released 1,000 Federally Endangered freshwater mussels into the Powell River at Well Being Foundation. The Well Being release site was one of four sites selected within a 35 mile stretch of the Powell River in Claiborne County, TN. These four sites were selected based on the suitability of the river flow and gravelly sand bottom and based on the presence of exiting mussel species. During July and August of 2012, staff from Virginia Tech Mussel Lab stayed at Well Being Conference Center on 5 occasions while they investigated segments of the river. We were thrilled that one of the sites chosen for the release of the painstakingly raised mussels was here at Well Being Foundation.
