The Third Annual Powell River Kayak and Canoe Regatta will be held on Saturday April 29, 2017. The race is a 12-mile event beginning at Well Being Conference Center on the Class 1 Powell River in scenic in the scenic Cumberland Mountains of NE Tennessee. The race is a production of the Claiborne County Tourism Commission and the Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce.
Here’s what a couple paddlers said about last year’s event:
“What a well prepared and professionally run event! It seems like I only met a small fraction of the many volunteers you had on hand but everyone was helpful and friendly. As a paddler, I felt spoiled. Nice! Hopefully your ‘first’ annual regatta will continue into a second and more. If so, I’ll be back. And what a beautiful river you have. Even while racing, there was enough time to notice the river and the countryside along its banks. Again, thank you for putting on such a great event. Please thank everyone for making an awesome weekend.” Jim B. from Knoxville
“Just wanted to drop you a note and say thank you for a splendid weekend. Your event was highly organized, the venue was amazing and the Powell River was a spectacular race course. Your event just might be my new favorite and I’ll be back next year for sure. Everyone has been so positive about the weekend that I suspect your event will really explode next year.”
Chris H. from North Carolina
Here’s some photos (set to some beautiful Appalachian flavored cello music – you don’t hear that everyday!) and a short but exciting GoPro video of winning paddlers from previous Regattas:
There will be nine race categories, each with prize money for 1st and 2nd place finishers and one “Recreational category” for people who want to paddle with friends and family of different age and gender categories and who are not racing competitively. Last year, there was a delightful mix of serious racers and recreational paddlers. “Racing Kayaks” and SUP’s will have their own categories. There will be no prize money offered in the “Recreational” category. As last year, Free shuttle (for people and boats) back to the Starting Area are will be provided by Regatta Volunteers.
Net proceeds from this benefit event will be used exclusively for improving public access onto the 114 miles of the Powell River in Tennessee for paddling and fishing. There is currently only one publicly listed, improved access points onto the Powell over its 70 miles in Claiborne County. See www.PowellRiverBlueway.org for more details on this worthy project.
